BYSTANDER ACTION

ANTI-RACISM TRAINING

  • Training program to equip bystanders with the skills to act to challenge racism in public places  when they witness them as bystanders

  • The need for such a program in the local area through a series of consultations, forums and listening activities since 2011- workers in the human services sector and community members felt disturbed and angered by public acts of racism and identified that they would want to act to challenge such incidents if they witnessed them but they identified a lack of skills, knowledge and confidence as preventing them to take action in publicly challenging racism.  They expressed a desire to learn the skills that would support them to challenge racism in non-violent ways.

  • Train the trainer model

  • There are no specific projects that train and support ordinary Australians to take a non-violent stand against racism and racial vilification in public places

  • benefits for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds that are subjected to racism in public places- feel that the public is willing to stand up against racism and protect them, which promotes social inclusion

  • benefits for participants- equipped with the awareness, knowledge, skills and practical training

  • to act safely, non-violently and effectively when they witness public acts of racism
             - in their workplaces, participants’ actions promote an environment where racism is not tolerated

  • Participants are skilled to train others in their organisations or communities and the skills spread

  • long-term effect on promoting the societal norm of anti-racism and tolerance- challenging racism in public places
